An Open Letter to the Community Members of Abegweit Mi’kmaw Nation

RE: Senate Appointment

Dear Community,

As many of you will know by now, I have been appointed to the Senate of Canada. It is the next chapter in my professional career and I am eagerly looking forward to the challenge.

However, my appointment does come with mixed emotions. I have been the Chief of the Abegweit Mi’kmaw Nation for just over eleven years, and it is, and will always be, one of the very highest points of my life – both personally and professionally. The fact that the community has placed their trust in me in three successive elections is a tremendous honour that I shall never forget, and for which I will always be grateful.

I love the community of Abegweit, I love the people of our First Nation, and I love the Mi’kmaq of this province. It is humbling that I will be the first Mi’kmaq from PEI to be a part of the Parliament of Canada.

I may have a new job title, but I want to assure everyone that I will continue to be a passionate advocate for the Indigenous Mi’kmaq of Prince Edward Island. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to serve you in this new capacity.

I am very proud of the good things that we have been able to accomplish by working together over the last decade. Working collectively we have taken the Band to new heights and have positioned it well to continue to grow and thrive in the years to come. We are fortunate to have the strong leadership of Councillors Knockwood and Jadis to carry on this progress moving forward. We are also fortunate to have quality Band staff who will play a vital role in maintaining stability and in continuing the positive growth of our community.

More than anything I want to say thank you. Thank you for providing me with the opportunity to lead and to work for you. Thank you for working with me and letting me work with you. Thank you for the privilege of serving as your Chief. Abegweit is where my heart is, and shall always be.

Yours in Spirit,

Senator Brian Francis
