Who We Are

Abegweit First Nation is a passionate and forward-thinking Mi’kmaq community that have called Epekwitk (Prince Edward Island) home for over 12,000 years.

As Mi’kmaq, our culture and traditions have been passed down from generation to generation successively since time immemorial.

As a Band government, our creation dates to 1972, when we split from Lennox Island First Nation and formed a new Band to better serve the Mi’kmaw population in central and eastern Prince Edward Island.

Today, our community consists of three reserves in Morell, Rocky Point and Scotchfort.

Vision

Our vision is to grow a healthy and sustainable community, generating opportunities for individuals and families though economic growth, job creation and entrepreneurship.

We EMPOWER PEOPLE to achieve their full potential

We lead based on TRANSPARENCY and ENGAGEMENT

We forge mutually BENEFICIAL PARTNERSHIPS

We make decisions with TODAY and the NEXT GENERATION in mind

 One Community Growing Together

Charting Our Progress

Abegweit has been growing at a tremendous pace. Our population continues to outpace provincial and national growth rates, and our leadership continues to acquire new lands and resources.

Under the current Council, Abegweit has expedited an array of new and exciting developments, from new commercial buildings and transportation infrastructure to new housing units and recreation facilities. This growth has been part of a holistic effort to close the Indigenous infrastructure gap and support a vision of sustainable community development and economic growth (see Developments & Initiatives).

Leadership for Today

All members of our Council were re-elected in June of 2023 with a mandate to continue the community’s aggressive growth agenda. This council consists of the following dedicated and passionate leaders:

  • Chief Roderick Gould Jr.
  • Councillor Sheri Bernard
  • Councillor Chris Jadis
  • Councillor Jacob Jadis

The Council takes 100% of its direction from the community and is supported by a team of administrative professionals, many of whom are from the community, that help move development projects forward and maintain the Band’s various community programs and services.
